National Breast Cancer Awareness Month: The Importance of Getting Involved

This October, make a difference and help fight breast cancer! There are many ways to get involved, so find an activity that suits you and participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Breast Cancer: What Is It?

Breast cancer occurs when cells divide and grow uncontrollably, resulting in a mass called a tumor. If you notice changes in the skin of your breast, feel a lump in your breast, or experience a change in the size of your breast, these may all be signs of breast cancer.

What is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) occurs every October to help raise awareness of the disease and to promote early detection and treatment. During NBCAM, organizations across the country work to increase public knowledge about breast cancer through education and outreach programs.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women after heart disease. However, death rates from breast cancer have been declining since 1989, thanks partly to early detection and improved treatment. During NBCAM, we renew our efforts to promote early detection and raise awareness of breast cancer risks, so we can continue to progress in the fight against this disease.

Why is It Important to Get Involved?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, with over 1.7 million new cases diagnosed yearly. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 268,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and screening and support those battling the disease.

There are many ways to get involved in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You can donate to a breast cancer research charity, participate in a local fundraiser, or simply spread the word about the importance of early detection. Whatever you do, you can help make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
