Each year for the past several years, statistics have indicated that blepharoplasty, or eyelid rejuvenation, has been one of the most sought-after facial procedures. While there are still benefits to facelift surgery, many people report feeling so happy with eyelid rejuvenation that their consideration of a full facelift diminished after correcting signs of aging such as puffiness and drooping eyelids.
It’s evident to most people that heaviness and wrinkling around the eyes can be a significant contributor to the appearance of age. Research also indicates that a person with heavy eyelids, undereye bags, and other common eye problems is often thought to be fatigued, unhealthy, or rather unwelcoming. By refining the tissue around the eyes, these perceptions vanish right along with wrinkles and bags. If you’ve been considering eyelid rejuvenation, you probably want to know what recovery will be like. We’ll discuss that here.
Blepharoplasty is conducted through small incisions in the upper or lower eyelid (or both). The slight disruption of tissue involved in surgery means that swelling and bruising will develop shortly after surgery. By the time patients return home from their procedure, they will see these side effects. However, swelling and bruising can be managed with short applications of cold compresses. These applications may continue throughout the first two days after surgery to keep side effects under control. Head elevation is also beneficial and can be accomplished by sleeping with extra pillows.
Blepharoplasty recovery is not typically described as painful, which is one of the advantages of this procedure. Patients are prescribed pain medication before surgery and are advised to take this medication as directed after surgery even if they are not in pain. After a few days, it may be possible to reduce prescription medication or trade it for over-the-counter pain relief.
The incisions that accommodate surgery may be made on the inner part of the eyelid. This avoids visible scarring altogether. However, in the instance of external incisions, patients can still feel confident that scarring will be minimal and also hidden in natural creases.
