Every one of us is identified by our face. As we age and lose collagen and muscle tone, the facial aesthetic changes. The emotional impact of natural-occurring changes hits us all differently. From where we stand, we can say with confidence that the majority of middle-aged adults encounter some degree of struggle with their unique aging process. It isn’t that aging will alter our face so much that we no longer look like ourselves; it’s that aging alters the face enough to make us wish for younger days.
We don’t have to wish for younger days. In our Rancho Mirage office, we routinely assist patients with anti-aging treatments tailored to their needs. To reduce age-related changes in facial contours has become quite easy. Many patients turn to injectables like Botox, Dysport, and an array of dermal fillers to smooth creases and plump areas that have deflated. There is value in non-surgical modalities. At the same time, we want to point out that the surgical facelift is also still worthy of consideration.
The New Face of Facelift Surgery
Oh, we could name a few poster-children for what not to do when it comes to facelift surgery! But we won’t do that. What we will address is the idea that a facelift will result in an overly-tight face that is aged by hollowness and too-sharp contouring. The modern approach to facelift surgery is much less dramatic. Facelifts are customized procedures that observe each person’s facial structure carefully and reposition tissue over bony structure just enough to turn back time 10 to 15 years. Sometimes, this is possible with just a midface lift. Sometimes, we also lift skin on the chin and neck. In many cases, we use fat or facial fillers to round cheekbones that have lost their natural curvature.
A surgical facelift can correct more obvious signs of:
- Volume depletion
- Jowls
- Softening of the jawline and chin
- Loose skin and superficial tissue
- Loss of muscle tone in the face and neck
